Schuylkill Action Network

Between 1999 and 2003, the Philadelphia Water Department completed a source water assessment of the Schuylkill River that identified four major threats to surface-water supplies in the watershed. They are: abandoned mine drainage, agriculture, sewage discharges and stormwater.

The Schuylkill Action Network (SAN) was then formed in an effort to use this knowledge to initiate coordinated and collaborative protection efforts. SAN created workgroups to address each of the four major threats using the diverse array of local, state, regional, and national organizations and agencies that make up its membership. Workgroups are charged with prioritizing specific sources of pollution and then identifying and implementing projects to address them.
