Regional Sediment Management in the Delaware Estuary

A ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON Developing a Regional Sediment Management Plan

March 30th, 2010

9:30 - 4:30 p. m.

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge

8601 Lindbergh Boulevard
Philadelphia, PA 19153

DIRECTIONS TO MEETING

Goal:

  • To provide baseline info for developing a Delaware Estuary Regional Sediment Management Plan (RSMP)

AGENDA

Session 1: Example Regional Sediment Management Plans from other regions-

What are/were the issues?, What data were available?, How was the plan developed?, and How is it being used today?

  1. Introductions: J. B. Smith (Army Corps of Engineers)
  2. National Perspective: Lynn Martin (Army Corps of Engineers)
  3. New York/New Jersey RSMP: John Tavolaro (Army Corps of Engineers)
  4. Columbia River RSMP: Mike Ott (Army Corps of Engineers)

Session 2: Delaware Estuary Sediment Dynamics-

What do we know and what do we need to know for RSMP development and implementation/adaption?

  1. Geologic Framework: John Madsen (University of Delaware)
  2. Sediment Dynamics, Flux, and Budget: Chris Sommerfield (University of Delaware)
  3. Dredging and Practical Management: Jeff Gebert (Army Corps of Engineers)
  4. Regional Restoration: Danielle Kreeger (Partnership for the Delaware Estuary) and David Burke (PA DEP)
  5. Introduce Delaware Estuary RSMP: J.B. Smith (Army Corps of Engineers)

Session 3: Panel Discussion: Participant intake on issues of concern and opportunities for sediment management-

Facilitator: Jim Eisenhardt (Duffield Associates)

  1. Sediment Quality: John Yagecic (DRBC)
  2. Sediment Budget and Dynamics: Jeff Gebert (Army Corps of Engineers)
  3. Dredging: Tim Rooney (Army Corps of Engineers)
  4. Beneficial Use/Restoration: David Burke (PA DEP) and Danielle Kreeger (PDE)
  5. Meeting Wrap up: Identification, Discussion, and Integration into RSMP
  • Challenge questions to be addressed by panel:

1.) Have we identified the right questions to be discussed in the RSM Plan?

2.) Are there other important issues we should address?

3.) What data and data gaps exist?

4.) What additional opportunities and applications of the RSM plan should be considered for the Delaware Estuary?
