2012 Spokesdog Competition

Crown Your Canine Philly Water’s Best Friend

You and your pooch can fight "poolution" when you enter the Philly Water's Best Friend Spokesdog Competition, brought to you by the Philadelphia Water Department.  At stake is the grand prize, valued at $200, and the title of Philly Water’s Best Friend.

A call for entries will take place in the fall. Until then, look for last year's "spokesdogs," Molson of East Falls and Teddie of Manayunk.  Each will be handing out brochures and biodegradable bag dispensers at events in their neighborhoods.

The purpose of the Philly Water’s Best Friend Competition is to make waterways cleaner by teaching pet owners about the importance of picking up dog waste.

Contrary to popular opinion, dog waste is not environmentally friendly, nor is it a fertilizer.  Dog poop is actually a pollutant, and it can spread whenever rain falls or snow melts.  Waste that stays on the ground can leech into the earth or run off into storm drains and nearby waterways, like the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers.  Not only does this spread harmful bacteria, but also it breeds algae that can kill local fish.
